An areola tattoo after mastectomy takes two short sessions, six to eight weeks apart. The first visit is about two hours. The tattooing itself is only 20 to 30 minutes. Most women feel little or nothing, and you can start as soon as you are six months past your last surgery with your surgeon’s okay.
Here is exactly what to expect at Rise Skin Studio, from the first conversation to the final result.
Step 1: Your surgeon’s okay
Before anything else, you need clearance from your plastic surgeon. They know what happened during your surgery and what your skin has been through.
Wait at least six months after your last surgery.
There is no maximum. Krissy has worked with women ten years and forty years after surgery.
Surgeon retired or records missing? Any physician can clear you. Krissy will help you figure out who.
Step 2: A conversation, not a booking
The first step is a free consult, in person in Brandon or over Zoom. You talk. Krissy listens. There is no obligation to book anything.
Zoom consults mean women from Omaha, Des Moines, Fargo and the Twin Cities only make the drive once they are ready.
Step 3: Your first appointment, about two hours
Most of the visit is not tattooing. It is getting everything right first.
Paperwork and your history. Krissy is a registered nurse. She reads your chart.
Choosing your look. Bring a photo from before surgery and she will match size and color. Or choose fresh from her pigment swatches and portfolio.
Mapping. Placement is marked while you sit upright, so it looks right when you are on your feet.
A test spot. If you feel anything, a topical numbing agent is ready.
The tattoo itself: 20 to 30 minutes.
Does it hurt?
For most women, no. The nerves in that area were cut during surgery, so there is little feeling left. Many of Krissy’s clients are getting their very first tattoo, in their sixties, seventies and eighties.
Step 4: Healing, about a week
Fresh pigment always looks darker than the final result. That is expected, and it settles.
No swimming, hot tubs or soaking
No direct sun on the area
Nothing tight over it
You leave with written aftercare, and Krissy is a text away if anything looks off.
Step 5: Your second session, six to eight weeks later
This is where the final depth of color is built. It is included in your fee. If a third session is needed to get it right, there is no charge for that either.
Why a nurse matters here
South Dakota has no statewide tattoo license. Krissy is a registered nurse with 15 years in hospitals and a certified paramedical tattoo artist. Single-use needles, every time, in a studio that meets South Dakota Department of Health standards.
